How to Clean a Rec Tec (recteq Owner's Guide)
recteq (formerly Rec Tec) builds premium pellet smokers with stainless interiors and high-end components. Here's the cleaning routine that maintains the build quality and protects the long warranty.

recteq (the brand was rebranded from Rec Tec a few years back) builds premium pellet smokers — stainless steel interiors, six-year warranties on most components, build quality closer to Yoder than Traeger. Owners of recteq smokers tend to be detail-oriented people who chose the brand specifically for the construction.
The cleaning routine should reflect that investment. The good news is that the stainless interior makes cleaning faster than most pellet smokers — stainless wipes clean where painted steel needs scraping.
What’s distinctive about recteq cleaning
Stainless steel interior. The chamber walls, lid interior, and most internal components are stainless. This means soap-and-water cleaning is acceptable on internal surfaces (with limits — see below) and creosote wipes off rather than chipping off.
Bull horn temperature controller. recteq’s controllers (Smart Grill Tech) are PID-based and well-regarded. They hold temp tightly with minimal cycling — which means less creosote production per cook than typical pellet smokers.
Heavier-gauge steel construction. Like Yoder, recteq uses thicker steel than budget brands. Heat retention is excellent, cycling is reduced, internal residue is lower.
Bottle opener. Not a maintenance item, but a fun design touch. Most recteq models have a built-in bottle opener.
After-cook routine (5 minutes)
- Brush the cooking grates while warm
- Empty the grease drain bucket if more than half full
- Close the lid
Standard pellet smoker discipline; the routine works on every brand.
Monthly routine (15 minutes — generally less time than other brands)
The stainless interior speeds this up considerably. With cooker cool:
- Pull grates, heat baffle, and drip pan
- Vacuum the firepot
- Vacuum the chamber bottom
- Wipe the chamber interior with a damp soapy rag. This is where recteq differs — stainless tolerates mild soap that would strip seasoning on painted-steel cookers. Wring the rag well; you don’t want soaking wet stainless.
- Wash the drip pan and grease bucket
- Reinstall and run cooker at 350°F for 15 minutes empty to dry-fire
The stainless construction means you can actually clean to bright metal periodically without losing protective seasoning. This is a benefit unique to recteq and a few other premium brands.
Twice-a-year deep clean
In addition to the monthly steps:
- Pull the auger and inspect. Standard pellet smoker deep-clean step.
- Empty the hopper completely. recteq hoppers are large; pellet dust accumulates by month 6.
- Inspect the lid gasket. recteq gaskets are good quality, last 3-5 years. Replace at signs of compression or charring.
- Verify the controller is current. recteq pushes occasional firmware updates. Check the recteq app or website annually.
- Inspect the stainless for any oxidation. Surface oxidation on stainless can be polished out; deeper issues warrant attention.
recteq-specific issues
Stainless surface rust. Despite being stainless, the interior can develop rust spots if exposed to chlorides (from certain rubs, cleaning products) or if water sits on the surface for prolonged periods. Bar Keepers Friend handles surface oxidation; deeper issues are rare but warrant a service inquiry.
Controller WiFi connectivity. Smart Grill Tech controllers occasionally have connectivity issues. Restart the controller, verify your WiFi network is accessible, check for firmware updates.
Igniter rod replacement. recteq igniters can fail after 5-7 years. Replacement is straightforward; the part is around $40.
Pellet feed motor wear. Quieter than competitors when new; can develop a slight hum after years. The hum itself isn’t a problem; if the motor stops working, replacement is owner-serviceable.
Heat baffle warping. Possible after many years of high-heat cycling. Replacement baffles are available from recteq.
Comparison: recteq cleaning vs other premium brands
vs. Traeger Timberline: Both have stainless interiors. recteq’s controller (Smart Grill Tech) and Traeger’s (D2) are both PID-based and produce comparable cleanliness. Cleaning is similar; recteq slightly faster due to less complex internal architecture.
vs. Yoder YS640: Yoder is heavier-gauge but painted steel interior. Yoder cleaning involves scraping more often; recteq cleaning involves more wiping. Both are excellent cookers; the cleaning approaches differ in feel rather than time.
vs. Camp Chef Apex: Camp Chef Apex is mid-premium; recteq is full premium. Cleaning routines are similar but recteq parts last longer between replacements, so over a 10-year ownership, total maintenance cost is comparable despite recteq’s higher initial price.
Frequently asked questions
Can I really use soap on a recteq interior?
On stainless surfaces, mild dish soap is fine. The protective chromium oxide layer on stainless is unaffected by mild soap. What you can't use: bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, harsh degreasers, oven cleaner, abrasive scrubbers. Soap and water with a microfiber cloth is the standard.
How often does the lid gasket need to be replaced on a recteq?
3-5 years for typical residential use. recteq's gaskets are higher-quality than budget brands but eventually compress or char. Replacement gaskets are owner-installable in 30 minutes.
Why does my recteq controller display sometimes show a temperature my probe disagrees with?
Probe location matters. The cooker's internal probe is fixed at one location; food probes show local temps wherever they are. Differences of 10-20°F across a chamber are normal. If the discrepancy is much larger or persistent, calibrate the controller (per recteq instructions) or contact support.
What's the warranty on a recteq?
Six-year warranties are standard on most current recteq models, covering most components. The warranty is one of recteq's selling points — long enough that maintenance pays off across the warranty period.
Is recteq cheaper to maintain than other premium pellet smokers?
Marginally. Components last about as long as other premium brands; replacement parts are similarly priced. The savings come from the longer warranty period (six years covers many likely failures). Total cost of ownership over 10 years is comparable to Yoder, slightly more than Traeger Timberline, less than custom-built smokers.
